The Difference Between Lockdown and Shelter In Place

According to the U.S. Army website, a lockdown takes place, “… in response to an active shooter.” When an organization calls for people to shelter in place, it is typically “…in response to severe weather, and also a chemical, biological or radiological contamination that may have been released into the environment.”

To simplify: calling for a lockdown should only happen when there is an attack either inside or nearby a building. Shelter in place should only be used when asking people to protect themselves from a threat due to severe weather or some kind of contaminant.

Training personnel to understand the difference between these two terms can help save time and keep people safe should an incident occur. This will help minimize confusion and increase the likelihood that everyone has a clear understanding of what the situation is and what they should do.

Lockdown Message Template

Emergency lockdown scenarios typically occur during violent situations like an active shooter. Being prepared for this scenario is a must for any organization. When putting together a message template for a lockdown, consider the information you want to share, the actions you want people to take to remain safe, and how this message will be communicated. Here is an example:

Subject: Active Shooter! <INSERT ORGANIZATION> has issued a lockdown.

Body: An active shooter is in the area. Police are en-route. Initiate lockdown procedures and wait for the all-clear notification.

Connecting Door Locks to InformaCast

When it comes to safety, being able to control building access is critical. The ability to lock down and block traffic can prevent intruders and active shooters from reaching the people they want to harm. If locking doors/denying access is a manual process, or is one of many systems that need to be accessed during an emergency situation, the effectiveness can vary.

With InformaCast organizations can connect to door locks and access control systems (DACs) and activate those systems at the same time a mass notification is triggered. The most prevalent method used to trigger DAC is via a pair of dry contacts. The InformaCast M2M solution is a standards-based interface, providing a simple low voltage trigger. The DACs have the intelligence programmed within the system to recognize this trigger and take action. This solution requires a low voltage network converter box from Perle or Barix to function properly.

In this instance, the M2M sends a signal to the DACs as part of a recipient/device group for a message. Should an organization need to send a lockdown message, the door access control system can also be included with other devices the message is being sent to. This will trigger the door locks removing the need to utilize other systems/procedures.

Customer Story: Commuter Campus Initiates Lockdowns Using InformaCast

Northcentral Technical College in Wausau, Wis., has six campuses that serve upwards of 30,000 students and nearly 500 employees. With campuses spread across the northern part of the state, and its student population is made of commuters. This makes it challenging to alert the entire student body when an emergency occurs. Northcentral needed an emergency lockdown system that would keep people safe on campus, but also alert commuters to avoid the campus when an emergency was taking place.



The college decided to implement InformaCast to increase the effectiveness of its safety plans. InformaCast serves as the core of an integrated system of devices and tools that trigger and send mass notification broadcasts. A Genetec security system is tied into InformaCast for all the door locks and the camera system. Pushing a button on a Cisco desk phone or through the Genetec mobile app will lock all the doors, restrict key card access points, and shut off the room displays. Prerecorded emergency messages play on telephones and overhead speakers throughout campus. Prerecorded audio is also utilized in the event of severe weather to alert on- and off-premises students about potential school closings.

Each campus is able to customize InformaCast to respond to specific emergency and lockdown situations they might encounter. This includes events taking place on campus and events nearby that may pose a danger to students and staff. This is especially important on a commuter campus as incoming students may put themselves in the path of danger even if an incident is not occurring on the campus.
