Singlewire Spotlight: Daniel Cross

Each month, we’re featuring one of our stellar team members on our blog. Learn more about them and what they do at Singlewire.

How long have you been at Singlewire and what’s your position?

I’ve been in quality assurance at Singlewire for just over a year.

Please describe what you do at Singlewire.

I test the software we write by manually putting it through its paces and writing automated tests that check our latest changes nightly. I focus on testing InformaCast Fusion and the underlying platform for InformaCast. I also work on some of the infrastructure we use to build and test InformaCast.

What do like best about working at Singlewire?

I love the size of Singlewire - we’re big enough to get a lot done, but small enough that everyone’s on a first-name basis. It’s easy to walk over to someone’s desk to get a question answered or a problem solved.

What’s been your favorite project you’ve worked on here?

I started working here right as we started testing the initial Fusion release. It was a great introduction to how InformaCast works behind the scenes, and it was a big enough project to be a fun challenge.

What have you gained from working at Singlewire?

I’ve learned a lot about software test automation. I’d worked on automation before this, but not with people as experienced as some of the other folks here in QA. It’s been great to learn from them, and they’ve also introduced me to some great tools and frameworks for testing.

What are your favorite things to do outside of work?

I love to hike. Most of my vacations are spent in mountainous places. Closer to home, the city of Madison grooms cross country ski trails a block away from my house, so I’m hoping for lots of snow this winter.

What’s the best place you’ve traveled to and why?

A couple of years ago, my wife and spent a week in the Bernese Oberland in Switzerland. It was beautiful, and there was great hiking. I’d love to go back.

If you could only eat one thing for the rest of your life, what would it be and why?

Bread. It’s delicious, filling, and there are endless varieties of it.

Do you have any special talents?

I’m a classically-trained cellist. My degree is actually in cello performance from the Cleveland Institute of Music.

Where’s your hometown?

Charlotte, VT.
